Text by Erasmus Weichenhan:
Erasmus Weichenhau was an ex-Lutheran minister from Langenbielau, in Lower
Silesia / Dolnoslaskie, located in today's Poland, and previously a part
of Prussia. Langenbielau, Germany, is today known as Bielawa, Poland.
Weichenhau was a member of the Schwenkfelder community: Protestant Christians
who followed the teachings of Caspar Schwenkfeld von Ossig.
The Schwenkfelders were much influenced by other Protestant leaders of that
era, including the Moravian leader Count Zinzendorf. In Pennsylvania, this
group settled in Montgomery County, nears Lansdale and Pennsburg. Schwenkfelders
were also influenced by the Anabaptist groups.
This book explains the beliefs of the Schwenkfelders. This work was first
published in 1672 in Sulzbach, Germany.
Printed in Germantown by Michael Billmeyer:
Michael Billmeyer (born 1752 - died 1838) was one of the most influential
Pennsylvania German printers of his era.
Billmeyer and his father-in-law Peter Leibert took over the Germantown
printing business of Dunkard / Brethren printer in 1783, near Philadelphia.
Peter Leibert was Brethren, while Billmeyer was Lutheran. Peter
Leibert was a brother-in-law of Alexander Mack. By 1787 Peter Leibert left
Billmeyer's business to start his own printing business.
Billmeyer became one of the most prominent printers in Germantown. He
printed numerous works for the nearby Franconia Mennonite community, as well
as the Lutherans, Schwenkfelders, German Reformed church, etc.
Michael Billmeyer's printed works include: the Psalter, the New
Testament, the Ausbund hymnal used by the Mennonites and Amish,
etc. He also did some printing for the U. S. Congress.
Billmeyer purchased the paper for his books from the Peter Bechtel paper
mill and from the John Gorgas mill.
Michael Billmeyer married Mary Leipert / Mary Leibert. They lived on
Germantown land previously owned by John George Benzel / Bentzel.
The Billmeyer House was across the field from Cliveden.
The second American edition of this important Schwenkfelder book was published
in 1842 in Allentown by Blumer.
I purchased this book at an auction here in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
