First Edition

Ownership bookplate belonging to Thomas Payne M.A. to the front pastedown.

The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography writes, 'Dallaway, James (1763–1834), antiquary, was born on 20 February 1763 in the parish of Sts Philip and James, Bristol, the son of James Dallaway (1730–1787) of Stroud, Gloucestershire, a banker, and his wife, Martha (1739–1783), the daughter of Richard Hopton of Worcester; only he and his younger sister survived childhood. Having been ordained deacon in late 1785 by the bishop of Gloucester he became curate at Rodmarton, Gloucestershire, to Samuel Lysons (father of the antiquaries Daniel and Samuel), and then at Rodborough. He was engaged to assist Richard Bigland in editing his father's papers; before they parted acrimoniously in early 1794 he completed the first twenty-two parts of Ralph Bigland's Historical, Monumental, and Genealogical Collections, Relative to the County of Gloucester (1786–94) and gained a valuable introduction to the College of Arms. His Inquiries into the Origin and Progress of the Science of Heraldry in England (1793) was dedicated to the Earl Marshal. He was elected a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1789.'

CONDITION

The binding is tight and firm. There is some wear to the extremities including some cracking to the outer hinges and bumping. Internally the pages are bright and cleam with only the very occasional spot or handling mark. There are some ink drawings to the gutter of pages lxxx-lxxxii, with some slight offsetting. There are some handling marks and a couple of small closed tears to the title page. Overall the condition of the book is very good.
