A
very interesting work. Linn had been a chaplain during the American
Revolution and here, writing specifically in response to the French
Revolution, seems to believe the Lord is establishing his millennial reign
in the earth . . .events which have taken place during the summer,
confirm him in the opinion that civil liberty will universally prevail,
and that God is preparing the Way for the introduction of a glorious scene
upon earth. Later in the work he seems to look forward to the
millennium, so his position is a bit less than clear, at least from my
surface reading.
Signed by William
Smith, 1795, and Egbert T. Smith, both prominent citizens from Suffolk
Co., N.Y. Also, interestingly, there is a faint pencil signature on the
upper left of the fly leaf, Thomas Paine, 162.00. It is difficult
to see how Paine could have owned the present volume though as Wm. Smith's
autograph is from the date of the release of the volume.
