This map of  Pennsylvania is one in a series of 16 maps which were prepared by Katherine W. Ewing, Nashville, TN, in 1968 and published by Precision Prints  in 1974. The series is titled "Complete Maps of The Thirteen Original Colonies as well as Maine, Vermont, Kentucky, and Tennessee".

The maps are being sold individually rather than all together as a series as they were originally published.

Each map is printed on fine quality, 12 x 18",  cardstock paper; and is marked, in the lower left corner, "Researched, Drawn, Inked and Painted by Katherine W. Ewing"; and in the lower right corner, "(c) Precision Prints, Nashville, Tenn. 1974".  The  following information is printed on the back side of the folio cover.

Precision Prints, Nashville, Tennessee is pleased to present this volume as a service to students, historians, genealogical researchers, cartographers, bibliophiles and other segments of the public who may not be aware of, or have access to, the primary source of the book's contents.

Mrs. Albert Ewing, Jr. of Nashville, a professional genealogist of long standing, and has carefully traced all of the maps printed in the 1907-1908 publications by the United States Government Printing Office of the First Federal Census of those States whose 1790 schedules were not destroyed by fire during the War of 1812. Those maps had been taken from a now rare Atlas, published in 1796 by John Reid, New York City.

Inasmuch as the maps of the States whose censuses were LOST were yet available in the so-called "John Reid Atlas", photostatic copies were secured from the Library of Congress in Washington where several original Reid Atlases are preserved. All of the maps in this book are taken from that Atlas, with the exception of that of the State of Kentucky, which is by J. Russell and was published in 1794 in London. The States of Maine, Vermont, Kentucky, and Tennessee, though not among the Thirteen Original Colonies, are included so that the Colonial Eastern Seaboard and all States of our Union through 1796 would be incorporated in a single map portfolio.

This series traces the Migration Routes of the restless, peripatetic settlers, not merely in a broad pattern, but also on the actual roads, paths and trails they travelled and the streams they sailed from one Colony or State to another, or as families and communities drifted in a movement general toward the West.

It is interesting to note that, of the several "Sculptors" and/or "Delineators" of the sixteen maps, Benjamin Tanner (1775-1848, Engraver) signed eight maps; D. Martin, three; _____ Roberts, one; J. Russell,.one. Three maps are unsigned. The minutiae of detail delineated by these men are variously instructive, amusing, quaint - a Mirror to the Past.

The tracings of these maps were transfered to illustration board, inked and painted by the artist in 1968, during months of painstaking study, research and execution, with the aim that the results now published would be of value and benefit to all who might appreciate the efforts of the hardy surveyors and chain-carriers who made the initial plats; the "Sculptors" who laboriously engraved the plates; and lastly, the worthy Messrs. Reid and WINTERBOTHAM. It was the former who had the foresight in 1796 to publish "AN HISTORICAL, GEOGRAPHICAL, COMMERCIAL AND Philosophical HISTORY of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" (in Four Volumes, WITH ATLAS), compiled by WILLIAM WINTERBOTHAM.

Our gratitude to all of those men for their courage, talents and acumen, which, together with the present-day reproductions of their endeavors, combine to make this slender volume possible.

Also included with the series is a photocopied sheet, written in Mrs. Ewing's own hand writing, in which she offers some of the more interesting thoughts she had about each state as she prepared the maps. The introductory paragraph and her comments about this particular state are copied for you below.

At the request of the Publishers, I have jotted down some of the interesting, unexpected little items encountered, or thoughts coming to mind, as I traced, inked and painted, although first, foremost and always my concern was with the ROADS. I observed their fingers reaching out from the maze-like convergings on the East Coast, into the Hinterland, where they felt their way thru the Gaps and Passes of the Cumberland, Blue Ridge and Appalachian Mountain chains. Here then are my notes on the maps ...

PENNSYLVANIA, a gorgeous State, busiest with roads on the Southern border, less crowded to the West and scarce to the North, all executed by an unknown engraver who nevertheless inserted a 23-mile portage in Northumberland County and drew his mountain range to resemble little marching ticks, their ranks bisected by the broad Susquahanna. As I worked on the roads near Philadelphia, I thought of the strong draught horses pulling the vehicles of the Stage Coach Line (established and maintained in the late 1790's by some of my family connections) over the roads from Philadelphia to New York City and back. The trip required three days each way - so fast for that period that the Line was called Barnhill's Flying Machine". I wonder whether our unknown "Sculptor" had occasion to travel via the Flying Machine.

Mrs. Ewing's handwritten note in the margin of the map states: " Tracing of a map in "Heads of Families - 1790 Census  ( U. S. Gov't Printing Office, Washington 1908) drawn and tinted July 1968 by Katherine W. Ewing (Mrs. Albert, Jr.), Nashville, Tennessee."

The number "2" is inked in black, at the paper's edge; it notes New York's order of ratification of the Federal Constitution and admission to the Union.

CONDITION: Very good. Some may consider it Near Mint. It is clean and bright all over with no markings, soiling,  tears or creases. The only flaw is a slight warp to the paper in one corner, although there is no sign of moisture damage and no odor. I've had these for quite a while; they've been stored in a climate control, non-smoking environment.

The map will be shipped flat, in a flattened Priority Mail box.

I have a few remaining maps from the series, either listed in current auctions or in my eBay store (Category: Paper & Ephemera - Maps). There will be no additional S&H charge for additional maps purchased.

Shipping & Handling Back to Top

We ship domestic and international orders via USPS and try to offer you the most economical shipping options. Delivery Confirmation is used for all shipments allowed by the Post Office. Flat items shipped in a regular size envelope, like postcards, do not qualify. S&H charges quoted include actual postage cost, delivery confirmation, and a nominal handling fee. All items are professionally packed, using new and gently used packing materials.

Insurance may be purchased at additional cost. It is always recommended for fragile items and required for large fragile items or those with a value of $100 or more. Although orders are packed securely for safe transit, we are not responsible for any damage or loss caused by the Post Office while in transit. We normally ship orders within 5 days of payment receipt. Since we offer combined shipping and a choice of shipping options, we do not process and pack orders until they are paid for.

Attention International Bidders: USPS only offers three types of service for international shipments: First Class (available for shipments less than 4 lbs., insurance is not available); Priority (available for any size shipment but required for any weighing over 4 lbs. Insurance is available at additional charge and some indemnity coverage is provided free of charge), and Express (available for any size order). We add a nominal surcharge to international orders to defray the added labor costs of processing these orders. The S&H charges in the Shipping Calculator reflect your actual cost, except for any additional insurance.

MAGAZINE GRADING Back to Top
  • MINT: Mint condition is normally meant to be the same condition as a magazine was when it was new. Since we deal in Vintage Magazines which have been pre-owned, we seldom, if ever, use this grade. Even when a magazine appears to be in Mint condition, we will grade it as Near Mint.
  • NRMT (Near Mint): Either looks like new or has very slight wear from mishandling either on the newsstand or during mail delivery; including minor edge wear, corner bumps, and light dimpling on the cover.
  • VF (Very Fine) : A possibly read, but carefully handled, magazine. Will have some light wear from handling or being read and may include such minor defects as loss of lustre, rubbing, a small tear on cover or page, a faint crease on cover or page, thumbing dimples, or a possible mailing label on cover (will be noted in description). Will be securely bound. No soiling or markings.
  • FINE: A magazine which has obviously been read but carefully handled and well-maintained. Cover may show wear, but will still be intact. Pages may show light signs of handling. Securely bound, no missing pages, no torn pages, no major tears, no paper peels, no taping, no soiling, no markings.
  • VG (Very Good): An average copy with signs of normal handling. May have a faded cover with considerable rubbing, dog-eared corners, a slight tear, creases, etc.
  • GOOD: Well read and handled carelessly with above average signs of wear or mishandling. Defects will be noted.

  • BOOK GRADING Back to Top
  • LIKE NEW (LN) or VERY FINE (VF): Book should be in the same immaculate condition in which it was published. There should be no defects, no missing pages, no library stamps, , no inscriptions etc. The Dust Jacket, if it was issued with one, should be perfect, without any tears, etc..
  • FINE (F or FN): Almost As New. There should be no defects or signs of wear. The jacket may have a slight tear or other minor defect which will be noted.
  • VERY GOOD (VG): A book that shows small signs of wear, but has no tears. Binding is secure. Any defects will be noted.
  • GOOD (G): An average, used and worn book. No missing pages. Any defects or major wear will be noted.
  • FAIR(F): A worn book that has complete text pages (including those with maps or plates) but may lack endpapers, half-title, et cetera (which must be noted). Binding, jacket (if any), et cetera may also be worn. All defects will be noted.
  • POOR: A book that is so worn that its only merit is as a reading copy or to supplement a research or craft project. Will have complete text unless otherwise noted. May be soiled, scuffed, stained, or spotted and may have loose joints, hinges, pages, and so on.

  • RECORD GRADING Back to Top
Records are examined visually and tested on a turntable before grading.

  • STILL SEALED: An LP which is still sealed in its original factory shrink wrap. LP is assumed to be in mint condition. Sleeve will be graded visually and any defects or wear from storage or handling will be noted.
  • MINT (NM or M-): A nearly perfect record which looks like new. The record should show no obvious signs of wear. A 45 RPM or EP sleeve should have no more than the most minor defects, such as almost invisible ring wear or other signs of slight handling. An LP jacket should have no creases, folds, seam splits or any other noticeable similar defect. No cut-out holes, either. The same should be true of any other inserts, such as posters, lyric sleeves and the like.
  • VERY GOOD PLUS (VG+): Record will show some signs of previous play and handling, but has been carefully maintained.. Record surfaces may show some slight signs of wear and may have slight scuffs or very light scratches that don't affect one's listening experience. Slight warps that do not affect the sound are OK. The label may have some ring wear or discoloration, but it should be barely noticeable. The center hole will not have been misshapen by repeated play. Picture sleeves and LP inner sleeves will have some slight ring wear, lightly turned-up corners, or a slight seam split. An LP jacket may have slight signs of wear also and may be marred by a cut-out hole, indentation or corner indicating it was taken out of print and sold at a discount. In general, if not for a couple minor things wrong with it, this would be Near Mint. All but the most mint-crazy collectors will find a Very Good Plus record highly acceptable. A synonym used by some collectors and dealers for "Very Good Plus" is "Excellent."
  • VERY GOOD (VG): Surface noise will be evident upon playing, especially in soft passages and during a song's intro and fade, but will not overpower the music otherwise. Groove wear will start to be noticeable, as will light scratches (deep enough to feel with a fingernail) that will affect the sound. Labels may have some writing, tape or stickers. The same will be true of picture sleeves or LP covers. However, it will not have all these problems at the same time, only two or three of them.
  • GOOD (G), Good Plus (G+): Good does not mean Bad! A record in Good or Good Plus condition can be put onto a turntable and will play through without skipping. But it will have significant surface noise and scratches and visible groove wear. A jacket or sleeve will have seam splits, especially at the bottom or on the spine. Tape, writing, ring wear or other defects will start to overwhelm the object.
