17th C Mandingo Chiefton Sword w/Tattoo Skin Sheath
Amazing Possible Slaver's Sword MUST SEE THIS ONE!!
We ended up with four fantastic Antique African items all on the same day. We are putting them up in 4 separate auctions, be sure to check them all out.
This is an amazing piece, a Mandingo Chiefton's Sword, in a tattooed skin sheath. (We don't know what type of skin it is, whether pig or another animal.) The tattoos were applied after the sheath was designed as the lines cutting into the skin never healed over, and they follow the design and shape of the sheath. We had someone do some research into this one over the last few months and their conclusion was this is circa 17th Century. The blade is European, possibly French, (Mandingo swords always used European blades that were gleaned from or won in battle with the Europeans.)
For its age and material, the sheath is in remarkable condition, with some splitting near the tip, a few peals of the surface of the skin along the edges and a repair near the hilt of the sheath. The skin sheath is held together by a stitching along the edges, alternating edge on each section of the sheath. The tattooing is of circles, half circles and lines following the sheath's design and some red dyeing in some of the areas. The skin itself is a deep chestnut brown. The handle is also made of the same skin and there is a nugget of some type of metal on the end holding the end of the sword in place. (We don't know what type of metal.)
The blade itself has been rehammered over the years, and shows much of the scars of age upon it. It measures approx. 28 1/8" long, from tip to end of the handle, just the blade is approx. 22" long and 1" across at its base, where it is also about 3/16" thick. In the sheath it is approx. 29 1/2" long.
Our researcher found that the Mandingo Tribe (also known as the Mandinka, Mande, or the Malinke Tribes) were the traders of the African West Coast, trading primarily in gold and slaves. So... this has the possibility of being a slaver's sword.
Estimated shipping weight, (packaged) is 3 lb in a 36 x 6 x 6 box.

TERMS OF SERVICE
EBAY is ALL we do for a living, husband and wife (Norb & Marie) working together, while we home school our kids on our farmette in Rural Delmarva. We have worked very hard to build our little business and it is very important to us. We try and do business the old fashioned way and have a rather simple outlook.
Treat all of your customers as if they are family.
Be curteous, answer emails, be fair in all your deallings and try and make friends of each and every customer.
BUT... with eBay's new star rating and the rate increases in the U.S. Postal rates we needed to define and explain our methods of business.
ONE - Who We Deal With
We sell and ship world wide to anywhere, so please email us for a quote to wherever you happen to be.
TWO - Shipping Charges
We charge shipping based on the USPS system, we will sometimes ship via courier if we can get it to you within the same time frame or faster. We add a reasonable cost for materials, normally that is $2.00. For small flat items $1.00. That covers the expense of boxes, envelopes, bubble wrap, peanuts, (We only use new packing materials, life is too short to scrounge through dumpsters). For larger items that take a larger more expensive box, we charge a little more, to cover the special box, example paintings or lamps. For oversized items or items that will take special attention to package, (Build a crate, wrap a zillion things individually, etc.), we ask you to email us for a quote on shipping prior to the auction ending. If you do not, we charge the same amount as if you did. In other words WE NEVER GOUGE SHIPPING COSTS!!
TWO POINT ONE - International Shipping
We charge shipping based on the USPS international system. The rates follow the same guidelines as number two above, though for international customers we add an additional $1.00 to cover the extra paperwork involved in international shipping. If an amount goes over $50 in value we will only ship it with Priority or Express Mail, regardless how small an item. That allows for us to have international tracking. There is no tracking available on First Class Mail.
TWO POINT TWO - Insurance
We require insurance on any item that goes over $27.00 in value. Because eBay does not have a way of kicking in insurance when it reaches a certain level, we have to put down that insurance is required on all purchases. This is reflected in the shipping quoted. (eBay's calculator adds insurance into what you see on the site.) BUT... if an item ends under $27.00 we change the invoice insurance area to "Optional" and leave the choice up to you.
THREE - Methods of Payment Accepted
We accept Paypal, Checks, Cashier Checks, Money Orders. We also take Credit Cards Directly over the phone, (MC, VISA, DISCOVER) For American Express, you must use Paypal. Bottom line, whatever method is most convenient for you.
FOUR - Time Frame To Pay
We ask all auctions to be paid for in the fastest possible time frame. (This is all we do for a living and we need the money to pay the bills and buy more unique and fun items to put up on eBay)
FIVE - Shipping Time Frame
We make every effort to ship in a timely manner. We are home schooling the boys, listing tons of items, and as like any of us are just plain swamped, so we have to schedule a special time to pack and ship. We ship on a first paid, first shipped basis. (We do not ship any item until it has been paid and the funds have cleared.) With the ebb and flow of payments we manage to get everything out of the door within one week. If there is a rush, we will make every effort to work with you in getting it out of the door faster. As you can see from our feedback, we do not disappoint. OF COURSE, items that need special attention, crating, etc adds to the time frame of those items.
