I am currently listing a wide selection of Vintage Pocket Watches at great prices!!! Many of the pieces that I am offering are perfect for carrying and display and will make great gifts or simply treat yourself to a nice addition to your collection. Please view all my auctions for a super variety!

Coin silver hunters cases came in a variety of sizes. Cases weighing 2, 3 and 4 ounces where the most common. Cases with a weight of 5 ounces where quite hefty and presented a nice, bold size while 6 ounce cases where made in much less numbers and really started to add weight to the piece. Cases in the 8 ounce range are very rare and give a massive dynamic to the watch. Cases above 8 ounces are extremely hard to find and command significant premiums. This watch is a true monster. Without the movement, it weighs 9.8 ounces (280grams) which I believe is actually considered a 10 ounce case as I don't think coin silver cases where ever made in a 9 ounce weight. One thing is for sure, even deducting for the weight of the case spring, crystal, hinges, etc. this watch easily contains over 9 ounces of coin silver. A wonderful piece!

A beautiful eagle shield, anchor and arrow Navy or Maritime engraving ornaments the front cover. I don't have much history on this piece but through doing some research, it appears this emblem is referred to as the Commercial Merchant Jack Eagle used around 1850 - 1870.

The back cover is plain polished.

This case is just under 1" thick. The center ring or frame of the case is also plain polished. The covers close nice and tight.

The crown shows normal wear but is structurally sound. The large bow has remained very tight.

The case comes with gold, offset hinges that are nice and firm.

The case is hinged on both covers, as well as the dust cover and bezel. The entire case has remained very sound and firm.

The dust cover or cuvette is polished with an outer engine turned ring.

The case is nicely engraved on the inner front cover and is signed "Warranted - Coin Silver - 9710". There are no manufacturers marks on the case which is often the case on some of these larger coin silver cases. Why, I can't say for sure but I have seen a lot with no manufacturers markings.

The case is in super condition to be this old. It shows light, even wear yet the engraving has remained sharp and fully intact. The polished surfaces are bright and reflective with a mirror-like shine. The front cover opens sharply when released and stops abruptly at 90 degrees. The back and dusts covers also open properly on VERY firm hinges. All covers snap shut tight. The bow has remained firm. Normally, when I find coin silver watch cases over 6 ounces, the hinges tend to be a little sloppy. Not so with this piece.

The above photo gives you a realistic idea of the size of the watch. It dwarfs a normal, 16 size mans watch (not included in this auction). Overall, the mammoth piece measures 64mm (2 1/2") wide X 95mm (3 3/4") from the top of the bow to the base of the case X 24mm 15/16") thick. Total weight of this watch is a massive 12 ounces (340 grams)!

The front cover opens when released to reveal a beautiful, single sunk, white, porcelain dial set with black Roman hour chapters and signed "Elgin Nat'l Watch Co."

The dial is stark white and very clean. There are NO hairlines, edge chips, or flakes on the dial at all. Blue spade pointers center the dial. A glass crystal rests in a hinged bezel and is scratch free. The bezel is hinged to allow the time to be set with a key from the center post on the dial. A winding/setting key WILL be included with the watch.

The 18 Size, 11 jewel, Grade 12, key wind and set, gilt, full plate movement is clean and crisp.

The Movement is signed "M.D. Ogden - Elgin - Patent Pinion". The serial number 370644 dates this piece back to about 1875.

The movement is very bright and clean showing only minor service marks and no rust or spotting. The watch winds from the back and sets from the front. The above photo shows the winding key set in place ready to fully wind the watch. The winding key WILL be included with the watch. I have just had this watch completely and professionally disassembled, cleaned, oiled, polished timed and regulated. It winds and sets smooth and is running strong while keeping excellent time.

This Is A Spectacular Piece! Very Rare And Very Well Preserved! I Had To Compete And Pay Heavy To Get This Watch So It Isn't Cheap But Considering It's Rarity & Overall Condition, I Feel It Is Well Worth My Reserve.

This is a very nice, strong running watch that is ready to put to use or add to your collection. If I failed to mention something in my description of the watch OR there is erroneous information present, it is purely unintentional. In spite of as much care, detail and research as I try to put into the description of each and every timepiece I sell, it is inevitable that I will miss something on occasion. Please keep this in mind when viewing the pictures. Consider them carefully, in lieu of my description and make sure to e-mail me with any questions or concerns you may have PRIOR to bidding. I usually respond within 24 hours. Regardless of my description and photos here is the bottom line, I want you to be happy with your purchase. If you are not completely satisfied, please contact me within 3 days of receiving the item with your concerns. If we can't find a mutually agreeable solution, I will gladly give you a full refund of your high bid amount. Check out all my other items for a great selection to choose from and be sure to add me to your favorites list as I am constantly adding new listings.
