Foxing throughout, otherwise in very good condition. Wolf's analysis of the aparatus highlights influential scientists and remarkable progress in astronomy since its invention. Includes a diagram of telescopic observations, and commentary on the significant contributions by Galileo Galilei. Rare original lecture pamphlet with only one on Worldcat.

Johann Rudolf Wolf (1816-1893), was a Swiss astronomer and mathematician best known for his research on sunspots. Wolf's main contribution was the discovery of the 11 year sunspot cycle and he was the co-discoverer of its connection with geomagnetic activity on Earth. In 1849 he devised a system now known as Wolf's sunspot numbers. This system is still in use for studying solar activity by counting sunspots and sunspot groups. In mathematics, Wolf wrote on prime number theory and geometry, then later on probability and statistics.
