About CDV (Carte de visite)
Photographs
Carte de visite photographs, often
abbreviated as CDVs, were a type of photograph that became very popular starting
in the 1850’s – 1860’s, and were often used as "calling cards." An albumen type
of print, the carte de visite measures 2.125 x 3.5 inches mounted on a card
sized 2.5 x 4 inches. The backs of the cards often listed the name, city and
state of the photographer who took the photograph.
