Preface
Our chief object in writing this book is to assist those who are not familiar
with he construction or use of Universal or Plain Milling Machines. We desire to
aid in having the machines well understood, properly cared for and profitably
operated. Beyond this, we hope we have written somewhat of interest to those
well versed in the theory and practice of milling.
Content

This Milling Machine Manual is a wonderful example of
the kind of informative and down to earth instructional manuals that folks used
to create for their customers and sharing information.
This manual dates from the era when folks truly tried to
actually educate their customers and believed that their great dedication to
quality product and service would garner them business, rather than propriety
secrets or gimmicks.
Filled with simple explanations, good diagrams, no
complex math and algebra only where it is essential, this is the right way to
learn about how to use a milling machine.
While this pictures and the machine itself described in
the books is clearly of an older (ancient) design, the issues, methods, mills,
and their uses are still as relevant as when it was written.
If you are seeking a book on how to use a 5 axes closed
loop interferometer cnc milling system … to machine plutonium to sub-wavelength
tolerances, this is not your tome.
On the other hand, if you have a fascination with the
history of tools and technology and machine tools, are seeking a manual to this
older Brown and Sharp generation of Milling, or just want a down to earth and
fun intro to milling craft and knowledge, this is a great tome to read and
re-read.
Hey, I have used machine tools since I was a kid in the
local machine shop, (as a teenager long ago) and I learned a thing or two from
this publication.
Enjoy!
