Description: This coin has original color and excellent detail. On the obverse, the date and LIBERTY are full, and about ½ of Miss Liberty’s hair detail is visible. There is a planchet flaw (as-struck) below the lowest curls, which extends into the first two digits of the date. Reverse sharpness is consistent with the obverse, with full lettering and a full clear fraction (1/100). The stemless wreath feature is quite clear. Some weakness of strike is noted on the left side of the reverse. The rims on both sides are smooth and full. The color is original deep steel brown. Other than the obverse planchet flaw, there are no problems, and the eye appeal is above average (please see pictures). This coin will make a great addition to a major variety collection of Large Cents.
Terms: Winning bidder please add $2.95 for USPS shipping.
Numismatic Notes: The historic Louisiana Purchase was completed in 1803. U.S. president Thomas Jefferson purchased most of the territory west of the Mississippi River from France. This set the stage for the famous Lewis & Clark expedition that explored this territory. The recorded mintage of cents in 1803 was 2.47 million. There are 23 varieties from 1803 known to collectors, with variations in both date size and reverse fraction size. This coin is known as Sheldon-243, the only variety from 1803 with stemless wreath.
