Scarce and Interesting 19th Century Review on the Following Book

Author: DE HUMBOLDT, Alexander    Translated By: WILLIAM, Helen Maria.
Title: Personal Narrative of Travels to the Equinoctial Regions of the New Continent, during the years 1799-1804 - (A Review)
Publisher: London: The Quarterly Review, 1816.

Notes:An engaging contemporary analysis on the renowned and historically important book, which was published in 1814. Alexander von Humboldt visited the tropics of the New World between 1799 and 1804. On his return he wrote this book, a classic work of travel. In his lifetime, Humboldt was described as "next to Napoleon, the most famous man in Europe". An admirer of the French Revolution, a Neptunist, an anti-slavist, a lover of Rousseau and Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, and a close friend of Goethe (whom he resembled), he was also a profound influence upon Darwin and the course of Victorian science, as well as upon the proponents of new world independence.

Alexander Freiherr von Humboldt, 1769-1859, German naturalist and explorer, made several scientific excursions in Europe. In 1792 he was appointed assessor of mines in Berlin. From 1799 to 1804 he made his renowned expedition to Central and South America and Cuba, a journey that contributed greatly to sciences of physical geography and meteorology. Humboldt ascended peaks in the Peruvian Andes to study the relation of temperature and altitude, made observations leading to the discovery of meteor shower periodicity, and investigated the fertilizing properties of guano.

A rare and special item to pair with the collector's copy of the book!

Condition:
35 pages. Book review. Excellent condition, attractively bound in blue paper covers with label.
