Scarce and Interesting 19th Century Review on the Following Book
Author:
PORTER, Captain David.
Title: Journal of a Cruize made to the
Pacific Ocean by Captain David Porter, in the United States
Frigate Essex, in the years 1812, 1813, and 1814, containing
Description of the Cape de Verd Islands, Coasts of Barzil,
Patagonia, Chili and Peru, and of the Gallapagos Islands.
Also, a full Account of the Washington Group of Islands; the
Manners, Customs, Dress of the Inhabitants, &c. &c. - (A Review) Publisher: London: The Quarterly Review, 1815.
Notes: With quotations from Porter's books,
this is a most interesting though rather contemptuous
description of Porter's historically important journey, featuring
among other topics, the Gallapagos tortoise, cannibalism
and the massacre of the Typees.
Porter left the U.S. at the beginning of the War of 1812 with orders to cruise against
British shipping in the Atlantic. He exceeded his instructions by rounding Cape Horn and
attacking British whalers operating off South America and in the Galapagos, then landing in
the Marquesas and conducting a war against the fierce Taipi natives in an effort to
retain a base he established on the island (which he renamed Webster Island.)
His expedition ended off Chile in 1814 when his boat
was captured by British warships.
Porter's was a very important American Pacific voyage, a source for Melville's TYPEE.
A rare and unique item to pair with the collector's copy of the book.
