A Practical Guide to The Quarter and other Sessions of the Peace

Adapted to the Use of Young Magistrates and Gentlemen of the Legal Profession at the Commencement of their Public Duties

[By Thomas Noon Talfourd]

1815 - London - Reed and Hunter, Law-Booksellers

8.5" by 5.5", 463pp.

DETAILS

Thomas Noon Talfourd (1795-1854) was an English Judge, Member of Parliament and dramatist.

He became the judge of the Court of Common Pleas in 1849. He also introduced the copyright bill in 1837, although it didn't become law until 1842 and then in a much altered form.

As an author, Thomas Noon Talfourd contributed to many literary journals. He was law reporter to The Times, producing a number of articles on literary matters including Proposed New Law of Copyright of the Highest Importance to Authors (1838); Three Speeches delivered in the House of Commons in Favour of an Extension of Copyright (1840); and his famous Speech for the Defendant in the Prosecution, the Queen v. Moxon, for the Publication of Shelley's Poetical Works (1841). He edited a number of works including The Letters of Charles Lamb, with a Sketch of his Life (1837) and wrote plays, the most successful of which were Ion (1835) and The Athenian Captive (1837) were performed at Convent Garden and The Haymarket respectively to moderate acclaim.

Charles Dickens was friends with Talfourd and dedicated The Pickwick Papers to him. He was reputedly the archetype for Tommy Traddles in David Copperfield.

This volume was previously owned by Sir Robert George Wyndham Herbert Ickleton and contains his bookplate. Ickleton was an Eldon Law Scholar and private secretary to Gladstone.
