Scarce and Interesting 19th Century Review on the Following Book

Translated to English by: DAVIS, J. F.
Title: Laou-sing-urh, or 'An Heir in his old Age', a Chinese Drama - (A Review)
Publisher: London: The Quarterly Review, 1817.

Notes:An engaging analysis of Chinese theatre and poetry, then often construed by Western civilizations as being childish, crude and vulgar. Features Davis' translation, also published in 1817, of an ancient Chinese drama titled 'Laou-sing-urh'.

Excerpts from the text: ...as the Editor has observed, 'that those representations appear to descend into lowness and vulgarity, in the inverse ratio of the rank and situation in life of the parties for whose amusement they are exhibited'. .......The translation of the Laou-sing-urh puts an end to all dispute with regard to the nature of Chinese drama, if any doubt could have been entertained with regard to the authenticity and the fidelity of the translation of the 'Orphan of Tchao'.
End Excerpts.

Sir John Francis Davis, 1st Baronet (1795 - 1890), was a British diplomat , Sinologist, and the 2nd Governor of Hong Kong. Davis was appointed writer in the factory at Canton in 1813 at the age of eighteen. He showed marked linguistic and diplomatic abilities, and in consequence was chosen to accompany Lord Amherst on his unfortunate embassy to Pekin in 1816. On the return of the mission Davis again took up his duties at Canton, and in 1832 was promoted to be president of the East India Company's factory at that port. Two years later he was appointed joint commissioner in China with Lord Napier.

Two of his published works are: "The Chinese: a General Description of the Empire of China and its Inhabitants" and "China, During the War and Since the Peace".
