Hester Mickley was born July 3, 1804 and lived in Carrol's Delight, Hamiltonban Township, Adams County, Pa. as a young girl. She married George Plank (1797-1852) and they raised their family in Cumberland Township just south of Gettysburg on a farm that became battlefield in 1863. Their daughter Sarah Hester married Henry Spangler whose farm was also heavily involved during the Battle of Gettysburg. Offered here in Hester's 1818 dated hand written penmanship book, 7 3/4" by 13 1/4" of 16 pages that include her name and initials in many places, the names of her family and friends, including Dehl, Bailey, Myers, Eickerd, Martin, and others, practice lines, poetry and verse including "The Soldier's Return, The Hermit, Ode to Memory, The Indian Philosopher, The Sweet Brier's Rose," and more, all in lovely pen work. The book shows its age with scattered flaws, spots and rough edges, a hand sewn spine, and one partial page. Hester Mickley Plank passed away on Dec. 23, 1876 at age 72. This great manuscript was acquired directly from Hester's descendant. A great piece of history from a documented Gettysburg Battle witness family. N44.
