____________________________________________ A Rare Book of American Folk Medicine: Midwifery, Gynecology, and Obstetrics _______________________________________________________ This rare medical book presents folk medicine information for women and children: midwifery, gynecology, and obstetrics. Historians consider the author of this book to be Johann Georg Hohman, the Pennsylvania Dutch folk healer and writer. Hohman also authored the book The Long Lost Friend, which was for genrtations the standard Pennsylvania guide to pow wow healing and alternative medicine. The Long Lost Friend is a mixture of original cures, ancient Egyptian magick, German folklore, Pietistim and Mysticism, occult sorcery, gypsy magic, pallatives from the British Isles, wisdom from the Hebrew Kabala, and the transcendtalism of Albert Magnus. Hohman's book The Long Lost Friend was first published in Reading, Pennsylvania, (Berks County) in 1820, by Carl Bruckman. Two years later, in 1822, he published this midwifery book in nearby Ephrata, in Lancaster County. Johann Georg Homan was influenced by the German "Romanus" charm book Romanusbuchlein. He also borrowed from Albertus Magnus Egyptian Secrets. Also included in this midwifery book are instruction for dyeing linen cloth indigo blue and red. Albertus Magnus: Hohman's title of this book refers to Saint Albertus Magnus (born 1193 - died 1280), Bishop of Ratisbon / Regensburg, Germany, who was one of the great geniuses of medieval Europe. Albertus Magnus, known as Albert the Great and Universal Doctor, joined the Dominican Order, and taught at the leading universities of Europe, including Hildesheim, Freiburg, Regensburg, Strasbourg, Cologne, and Paris. Albertus Magus was very influential in introducing the teachings of Aristole to Europe. His writings had much influence through Europe, in particular on his pupil St. Thomas Aquinas. Albertus was canonized in 1931, and is the patron saint of natural sciences. Published in Ephrata, PA, by Joseph Bauman: This midwifery book is listed in the bibliography The First Century of German Language Printing in the United States of America., where the book is number 2534 on page 1822. That bibliography says this book is "attributed to the press of Joseph Bauman, Ephrata, Pa., on the basis of typographical evidence." Joseph Bauman (born 1765 - died 1809) was the patriarch of the Bauman family of printers in Ephrata. The Baumans were "householders" of the Ephrata Cloister, meaning they were members who lived off-property in traditonal families. John purchased the Ephrata Cloister printing press in 1800, and moved it to his nearby Ephrata home. He previously had worked as a papermaker with his father Benjamin Bauman. Joseph Bauman was the father of printer Samuel Bauman. The printer Joseph Bauman was a cousin. This midwifery book also is referenced in the book Folk Medicine of the Pennsylvania Germans, by Brendle and Unger. Price Reference: This midwifery book is seldom seen on the antiquarian book market. I have located only one other copy, avaailable for $850.00. I purchased this book at an auction in Ephrata, from an old collecton. Condition: Very Nice Condition: No library or institution markings. No previous owners' markings. The paper color to toned to a tan color, with a slight trace of foxing. The covers and pages are securely attached, with the original stitching.
