1824 General Lafayette / George Washington counterstamped on the reverse and obverse respectively of an 1818 US Large Cent. These were made in 1824 as souveneers of Lafayette's visit to the United States. Exceptional condition both of the counterstamps and coin. A very historic item, Number 48 of the 100 Greatest American Medals and Tokens by Katherine Jaeger and Q. David Bowers. Baker 198 C in the current Rulau / Fuld Washingtonia book where it notes just ten are known on Large Cent. There are probably a few more currently known but it is had to imagine a nicer example, very choice EF or better. Clearly superior to the first two Ford pieces that sold for $2,530 each and even a bit nicer than the final Ford example that sold for $3,220 in 2004. Check my store for other colonial coins and interesting items. Buyer pays $15.00 postage. South Carolina residents add 6% sales tax.
