Author:
DUNDAS, Captain John.
Title : Narrative of a Pedestrian Journey through Russia and
Siberian Tartary, from the Frontiers of China to the Frozen Sea and Kamschatka. - (A Review) Publisher: London: The Quarterly Review, 1825.
Notes:An engaging contemporary analysis following the release of
the second edition of Dundas' classic work, which was published in 1824.
A review that moves between mild irritation and grudging
admiration for Cochrane's 'Narrative of a Pedestrian Journey through Russia,'
highlighting, through extensive use of quotes, the most
extraordinary and humorous aspects of the expedition. Includes
the mores of Irkutsk society, the iron and copper
foundries at Ekatherinebourg, the Captain's reception at
Petersburg, his seizure at Tosna, the inhabitants bordering on
the Kolyma, the lives of the Tchutski, etc.
Despite Cochrane's alleged buffoonery, he did provide
the narrative of a journey, undertaken mostly by foot,
through Yakutsk to the lower Kolyma River
area, southward to Okhotsk, and then through Kamchatka,
with observations on indigenous peoples, their social and
economic conditions, a description of the annual fur trading
fair between the Russians and Chukchis and a brief history of Western Siberia.
A rare and special item to pair with the collector's copy of the book!
