This item is a beautiful, handcolored map for Marion District, South Carolina showing the location of all of the residents of the area in 1820 when the district was surveyed by M. Coate for publication in the Mills Atlas which was published in 1825. This map is part of a rare limited facsimile edition published in 1938. In the preface to the atlas published in 1938, the publishers Lucy Hampton Bostick and Fant H. Thornley wrote the following:
"Because of the rarity of original copies of Mills' Atlas of South Carolina and the increasing demand for it as source material by historians, genealogists and research workers, the publishers felt a new edition a worthwhile undertaking. The volume is a facsimile reproduction from the best available original."
And now we know that this edition, also, has become quite a commodity as the Facsimile Edition was limited to only 350 copies when it was published.
However this edition does provide an affordable option to the original published in 1820 which can sell for $20,000 or more in its entirety, and individually extracted maps costing in excess of $1,000.00 each, when and if they can be found.
This map is a double page and measures 22" X 18". The entire page measures 35" X 22".
The maps of the Atlas are particularly wonderful for genealogists because the family homesteads of each county are shown on the maps making it possible to see exactly where each family lived.
The Marion District 1820 families shown on the map include homesteads for the following surnames: Allen, Anderson, Anmon, Altmen, Athison, Barker, Bass, Bellare, Bethea, Bigham, Bird, Blackwell, Bradley, Brasswell, Bridges, Britton, Brown, Bryan, Burche, Butler, Campbell, Carmichael, Coleman, Collins, Coxe, Crawford, Culpepper, Davis, Dew, Dubose, Dunnam, Eagerton, Edwards, Elsop, Flint, Flowers, Floyd, Ford, Foxworth, Gallwant, Gaston, Gibson, Gilen, Godard, Godbold, Godfrey, Granthem, Graves, Gregg, Grice, Hambleton, Hartlee, Harod, harrell, Hay, Henderson, Hodges, Hopewell, Howard, Hunter, Hyott, James, Jeffrey, Johnson, Jones, Jordan, Kerby, Lane, Leggett, McArthur, McBride, McCall, McHeel, McInnis, McInziel, McKay, McKellar, McLellon, McMillan, McPherson, McRae, Matheson, Medlin, Miller, Moody, Muldrow, Munnerlyn, Murcheston, Murfee, Myers, Napper, Norman, Newson, Odom, Oliver, Owens, Page, Paul, Phillips, Polk, Port, Pretchard, Reaves, Reedy, Roberts, Roe, Rogers, Roper, Rowel, Shackelford, Smith, Stone, Sweet, Tart, Thompson, Timmons, Toly, Tyler, Wates, Watson, Wiggin, Wilson, Wolf, Woodberry, Woodward, Yelventon.
The item is in excellent condition with some slight water stains effecting the map with very little significance. This map would be a wonderful addition for descendants of any of these early South Carolina families or anyone else interested in the history of this district. (2-4202)
