Pictured is a cover from a unknown cachetmaker designed for Scott 1826 with a Plate Block affixed. Unaddressed with an open flap in VF condition.

Best known for military campaigns conducted on behalf of his native country, Bernardo de Gálvez was a brilliant and ambitious military leader. In 1777, he was appointed governor of the Spanish-dominated Louisiana territory and, in 1779, when Spain declared war on England, Gálvez seized the opportunity to display his military prowess. While permitting the sale of arms and ammunition to American patriots engaged in revolution against England, he limited American activities along the Mississippi River, saving for himself the glory of conquering English strongholds in the Lower Louisiana region.

The city of Galveston, Texas, is named for Bernardo de Gálvez. This First Day Cover commemorates the anniversary of the birth of General Gálvez. July 23. 1746.
