A markedly restrained review of the physician and traveller Granville's extraordinary tomb of European observations features differences of opinion about the merits of Ostend, Cologne, Brussels, the king of Prussia and Weimar; the cuisine of Leipsig, the arts and sciences of Berlin and the nobility, gentry, education, women, public institutions, palaces, Admiralty and army of Petersburg. Despite respecting the character of Lieutenant Colonel Evans, the reviewer distances himself from Evans' alarmist view of Russia (A Few Words on our Relations with Russia) as a power to be stopped by the united forces of all other European powers and allies himself with the objective of the self titled 'non-alarmist' whose objective involved the preservation of the civilization of the 'old world' (A Few Words on our Relations with Russia.)
