By Horatio Smith. London, 1831. Published by Henry Colburn and Richard Bentley. 1st Edition. This fascinating little Volume measures approx. 4 1/4” x 6 1/4” and contains 382 pages, an engraved frontispiece and 2, folding plates. The Volume is signed by the Author on the first (of 2) title pages.
This is a very interesting and early Volume which first presents a history of the games and amusements of ancient civilizations and then explores both the history and the present state of various forms of pastimes from Games of cards to Dancing - Chess to Juggling. Chapter headings include: Festivals, Games, and Amusements of: the ancient Jews, the Greek and Roman drama, the Olympic Games, Games of the ancient Romans, Gladiatorial Games, Field Sports, Hawking, Archery, Bullfights, Baiting of Animals, Dancing, Juggling, Morris Dancing, Minstrels, Playing Cards, Chess, Playhouse Notices, etc. The illustrations include “The Hawking Party”; a Plan of Olympia” and bas-reliefs of games found at the Tomb of Scaurus.
This fascinating and early, Game and Amusement Text is bound in its’ original, full polished leather. The spine ends are chipped and the front board is detached. The internal pages are complete, tight and in very good condition. All three plates are present - one of the folding plates has been miss-folded and has some foxing. A rare and fascinating, early 19th century Book of Games and Amusements throughout the centuries and a fantastic addition to any collection!!!!
