Above: Also includes a Brief History of the Church _______________________________ ...a rare edition. ...by an important early Pennsylvania Lutheran pastor. ...pastoring in Lebanon and Harrisburg, PA, etc. ________________________________________________________ By Rev. Dr. George Lochman: Rev. Dr. Johann Georg Lochman (born 1773 - died 1826) was a important pastor in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. He was born in Philadelphia, and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1789. He also studied theology under Rev. Dr. Helmuth. In 1794 he was licensed as a pastor with the Lutheran Synod of Pennsylvania. In 1794 Rev. Locham became the pastor of the Salem Lutheran Evangelical Church in Lebanon, PA, in Lebanon County. He was that community's fourth Lutheran pastor, following John Casper Stoever, Frederick Muhlenberg, and William Kurtz. Four years later, in 1798, Lebanon's new church was dedicated. For that dedication service Dr. Henry Muhlenberg of Lancaster's Trinity Lutheran Church preached the sermon. Pastor Lochman resigned in 1815, when he was called to pastor in Harrisburg, and Rev. William Ernest became pastor. Lochman then became pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Harrisburg, PA, in Dauphin County, where he served until his death in 1826. He was the fourth stationed pastor of that Harrisburg church, following Rev. Henry Muller, Rev. J. Peterson, and Rev. J. C. Schaeffer. In Harrisburg, Rev. Lochman was one of only two resident pastors in the city at that time. The other was Rev. Rahauser, of the German Reformed Church. Rev Lochman also pastored in Middletown, Pennsylvania. In 1819 Rev. Lochman received a doctor of divinty degree from Allegheny College, in Meadville, Pennsylvania. His wives were Mary Grotz of Philadelphia and Susan Hoffman of Philadelphia. His son was Rev. A. H. Lochman, of York, Pennsylvania. This Book: Rev. Lochman is identified as the author of this book in the definitive bibliography of Pennsylvania German early printing: The First Century of German Language Printing in the United States of America, edited by Arndt and Eck, page 1804. "Johann Georg Lochman (1773 - 1826) while pastor in Lebanon, Pa. (1794-1815), prepared a German catechism for the children of his parish... This independent German catechism went through five printings up to 1830; in subsequent editions the title was changed to "Haupt-Inhalt der Christlichen Lehre..." So this 1832 Pennsylvania German edition from Berks County is the first edition of this work with this title. The first edition in 1804 was printed by Johann Albrecht in Lancaster. Later editions were also published by Jacob Schnee in Lebanon, PA, and by Heinrich Sage in Lebanon, PA. In 1828 Gustav S. Peters printed an edition of Lochman's Hinterlassene Predigten in Harrisburg.
