Scarce and Interesting 19th Century Review on the Following Book
Edited by: PORTER, Miss Jane.
Title : Sir Edward
Seaward's Narrative of his Shipwreck,
and Consequent Discovery of Certain
Islands in the Caribbean Sea; with
a Detail of many Extraordinary and
Highly Interesting Events in his Life;
from the Years 1733 to 1749 - (A Review) Publisher: London: The Quarterly Review, 1832.
Notes:An engaging contemporary analysis on the renowned and
historic book, which was published in 1832.
A great review of a book which caused a huge sensation upon publication,
purporting to be the narrative of shipwrecked man and wife, Sir Edward
and Lady Seaward on a coconut covered promontory in the Caribbean sea.
The editor, Miss Jane Porter, asserted that the
narrative was genuine (though some concluded she was its author) and had been
placed in her hands by the writer's family. After
highlighting "some of the principal transactions" of the journal,
the reviewer announces, "not withstanding its solemn and alomst
sacred character, it is neither more nor less than pure,
unmingled fiction from first to last" and proceeds to enumerate reasons for his disbelief.
Despite the Quarterly's conviction, they, like many
members of the public enjoyed the "amusing romance" and
admired its author's undoubted literary ability.
A rare and special item to pair with the collector's copy of the book!
