Author: OWEN, Captain W. F. W.
Title: Narrative Of Voyages To Explore The Shores Of Africa, Arabia, & Madagascar.
Publisher: Royal Geographical Society, 1833. First Edition.

Notes: This is a fascinating expedition report published the same year as his all-important book, entitled; Narrative of Voyages to Explore the Shores of Africa, Arabia, & Madagascar; Performed in H.M. Ships Leven & Barracouta, under the Direction of Captain W.F. Owen, R.N. By Command of the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty. In the autumn of 1821 an expedition was fitted out at Woolwich, to explore the eastern coast of Africa, the island of Madagascar, and the shores of Arabia.

Excerpt From The Report: "...Captain Cutfield obtained an interview with a part of Hollontontes, who were on a predatory expedition against the natives: as our party approached, men with long white rods cleared the way, by striking the shins of those within their reach..."

Africa is the second largest continent in the world, and has the longest human history of any continent. African hominids date from at least 4 million years ago. The period of European domination of Africa began in the 15th cent. with Portuguese exploration of the coasts of Africa in an attempt to establish a safe route to India and to tap the lucrative gold trade of Sudan and the east coast trade in gold, slaves, and ivory conducted for centuries by Arabs and Swahili. In the centuries that followed, Vasco da Gama's explorations, coastal trading stations were established by Portugal and later by the Dutch, English, French, and other European maritime powers; under them the slave trade rapidly expanded. Broad to the north, Africa straddles the equator and stretches from Cape Blanc (Tunisia) in the north to Cape Agulhas (South Africa) in the south. The largest offshore island is Madagascar.

Madagascar is located in the Indian Ocean, separated from East Africa by the Mozambique Channel. Madagascar is the world's fourth largest island. The earliest history of Madagascar is unclear. Africans and Indonesians reached the island in about the 5th cent. A.D., the Indonesian immigration continuing until the 15th cent. From the 9th cent., Muslim traders (including some Arabs) from East Africa and the Comoro Islands settled in NW and SE Madagascar. Probably the first European to see Madagascar was Diogo Dias, a Portuguese navigator, in 1500.

Archaeological evidence points to ancient trade ties between Yemen and the North East African coast. However, little is definitely known of Arabian history in the period preceding the oldest inscriptions discovered, those dating from c.1000 B.C. No ancient power ever attempted the complete conquest of Arabia because of the formidable obstacles of crossing the deserts. After the discovery of the route to India around the Cape of Good Hope in 1498, European powers were attracted to Arabia as a site for trading bases.
