de Mouillage des Ehbiens et du Port de Saint-Briac
67 x 43 cm copperplate engraving, 70 x 52 cm sheet size, Dépôt-général de la Marine, Paris, 1879 (1843) We are pleased to offer this scarce original chart of the Breton village of Saint-Briac-sur-Mer and surrounding coast including the Ebihens Archipelago compiled under the direction the "Father of Modern French Hydrography" Charles-François Beautemps-Beaupré (1766-1854). The superbly engraved chart presents dense hachure work for topography and meticulous detail down to the depiction of individual buildings. The survey work for the chart was performed in 1829 and it was engraved and first published in 1836 with this example having been revised and reprinted in 1878. Curiously, the chart presents the spelling of the Archipel des Ebihens, both in the title cartouche and on the main island itself (which is often spelled as "Hébihens") as "Ehbiens", to which one can only say "Eh, bien".
We begin our survey of the chart with the town of Saint-Briac-sur-Mer and surrounding region. To get a sense of chart detail, consider that the distance from the tiny windmill at "Min. de la Marche" printed in far right margin to the Balise Chéruette buoy at upper left as seen in the enlarged photo below measures just 16 cm actual size. Note addition of tiny manuscript animal (un lapin, peut-être?) at margin edge:
