With Early Map - Uncharted Eastern Novaya Zemlya
Avgust Karlovich Tsivolko was a Russian navigator and Arctic explorer, who in 1834-1835 took part in the Pakhtusov expedition to Novaya Zemlya. In 1837, he
commanded a schooner named Krotov for the Baer expedition to Novaya Zemlya, during which
he mapped the Matochkin Strait. In 1838, he was sent to the northern and northeastern
shores of Novaya Zemlya to chart the unknown coasts. Tsivolka died of scurvy during
this expedition. A gulf in the Kara Sea and a group of islands in the Nordenskiöld Archipelago are named after him.
Pyotr Kuzmich Pakhtusov , Russian surveyor and Arctic explorer, is credited
with the first thorough survey of Novaya Zemlya. Between 1832 and 1835 Pakhtusov
undertook two exploratory journeys to Novaya Zemlya. He wintered on the island on
the two occasions and obtained detailed meteorological observations.
Pakhtusov carefully surveyed the southern and eastern parts of Novaya Zemlya
along with fellow explorer and cartographer Avgust Tsivolko during the last two years
of the expedition. They produced the first reliable maps of Novaya Zemlya's southern shores and part of the northern island's coastline.
