Title: Recent Intelligence upon the Frozen Ground in Siberia. The Russian Expeditions to Novaia Zemlia.

Authors: K.E. Von Baer, H.G. Hamilton
Publisher:London: Royal Geographical Society, 1838

Notes & Condition:   The authors present discoveries from contemporary Russian Expeditions to chart the Russian arctic Novaya Zemlya archipelago, including the foremost expeditions of Pyotr Kuzmich Pakhtusov, who is credited with the first thorough survey of Novaya Zemlya, and Avgust Tsivolko, who was equally instrumental in charting. Also with mention of Captain Beechey and Admiral Wrangel. Further includes a detailed table showing Struve's ascertainment of astronomical positions for important churches, towns, mosques and villages in Turkey, Moldavia, Wallachia and Bulgaria, Bulgaria and Roumelia, Servia, the Caucasus and Asia Minor, taken between 1828 and 1832, and also of Federow's same determinations on Ararat. The accompanying map shows Krusenstern Mountain, 'Nameless Bay' near Lütke's 'first seen mountain' and Rosmyssloff's 'Unknown Bay'. These are original text pages and map printed in 1838, in excellent condition. Attractively bound booklet style in modern blue paper covers with label. 15 pages plus a full-page map.

With Early Map - Uncharted Eastern Novaya Zemlya

Avgust Karlovich Tsivolko was a Russian navigator and Arctic explorer, who in 1834-1835 took part in the Pakhtusov expedition to Novaya Zemlya. In 1837, he commanded a schooner named Krotov for the Baer expedition to Novaya Zemlya, during which he mapped the Matochkin Strait. In 1838, he was sent to the northern and northeastern shores of Novaya Zemlya to chart the unknown coasts. Tsivolka died of scurvy during this expedition. A gulf in the Kara Sea and a group of islands in the Nordenskiöld Archipelago are named after him.

Pyotr Kuzmich Pakhtusov , Russian surveyor and Arctic explorer, is credited with the first thorough survey of Novaya Zemlya. Between 1832 and 1835 Pakhtusov undertook two exploratory journeys to Novaya Zemlya. He wintered on the island on the two occasions and obtained detailed meteorological observations. Pakhtusov carefully surveyed the southern and eastern parts of Novaya Zemlya along with fellow explorer and cartographer Avgust Tsivolko during the last two years of the expedition. They produced the first reliable maps of Novaya Zemlya's southern shores and part of the northern island's coastline.
