British Pottery G. Cheavins - Boston, England
Stoneware Water Filter
This is an antique stoneware gravity water filter. History note: In 1837 the Queen commissioned Doulton to design a water filter as the public became aware of the health hazards and poor taste of the river water. For its efforts Doulton was awarded the right to use "Royal" in its name. This water filter from the same era has a royal patent described as follows: "G. Gheavins improved patent gold medal self cleaning rapid water filter". It is missing the spigot but does have the two pierced filter separators and the lid. This item has the following defects that are pointed out in the pictures: Chips on the inner rim of lid, chips on the outer rim of lid, a small chip on the first rim below the top, the top filter plate has glazed over defects, some small nicks on the lower plate (which is marked with the letter "I"), a chip on the rim, worn glaze on one lion handle, a nick on the 2nd band rim, some discoloring (dark stains - we are not sure what this is from). Otherwise, it is in great condition. There are no other nicks, chips, cracks or evidence of repair. White spots are light reflections. Measurements (inches): Height (at newel) = 19.75, Height (at rim) = 16.25, Diameter (top) = 9.75, Diameter (top filter plate) = 6, Diameter (bottom filter plate) = 4.25. Dimensions given at maximum points. The total item(s) weight is approximately 28 pounds. Please notice the pictures included as they are more descriptive than words.
