Contemporary Brown repousse calf heavily embossed in rustic ecclesiastical style by Remnant and Edwards, London.
Title printed in red and black with decorative gold border, additional decorative title and 7 part-titles chromolithographed and heightened with gold by Owen Jones, text with wood-engraved decorative borders, ornaments and initials by Jones printed in black and colours, wood-engraved illustrations by J.C. Horsley, Henry Warren and George Scarf, June, under the superintendence of Lewis Gruner.
In Good to Very Good antiquarian condition, some rubbing to extremities, wants title label, split to joint at base of spine and upper board hardly noticeable. Internally has some foxing, marking.
Edge of D5, 'The Litany' with some loss to margin. Previous owners gift inscription to first blank.
A most perfect combination of binding and book production; the book as a whole has an effect of an elaborate miserichord.
