Condition: Very Good++ or better, with the following exceptions: Some plates show very minor foxing to the very edge of the paper (none on the image or text). Plate 3 with printing press line edge separation (1/4 X 3 Inches) at upper margin, apparently original to the printer. Also on Plate 3, small dampstain to bottom of paper, as seen in attached picture (none on the image or text). Plate 7 with very tiny corner loss to lower right corner, possibly original to the printer. Plate 1 has paper a line texture deffect in the upper right quadrant, original to the paper or to the printing process (not visible in the attached pictures).

This Listing is for a complete Set of Six (6) Muggletonian Celestial Color Prints depicting the Muggletonian’s Sect belief in the Creationist/Biblical order of the Universe, respectively, that the Sun is circling the Earth, unlike the Newtonian System. Isaac Frost conceived these Drawings in order to refine and prove the Biblical theory of the movements of the planets. Frost was an important member and scientist of the Sect in the 19th Century. The present prints were published as part of Frost’s “Two Systems of Astronomy” in 1846. On Plate No. 6, Frost makes the following point:
“This diagram will show that if the Earth revolves round the Sun, as the Solar System states, then it will necessarily follow that the Earth will differ in its position with the Sun and any given fixed star on its equator, every day, throughout the whole year. Now consider is it so? If it is not so, then it will make much in favour of the Holy Scriptures, that the Sun revolves round the Earth”.
The Muggletonian Sect was started by John Reeve (1608-1658) and his cousin Lodowick Muggleton (1609-1698) around 1651. They believed to be the two witnesses from the Book of Revelation appointed by God to preach to the unfaithful in the final days. It was a small, but financially viable Sect. Its last member, Philip Noakes, died in 1979. Most of the Muggletonian collections were transferred to the British Library.
Very few copies of these six Plates are in existence, as they were printed in a small number for the internal use of the Sect’s members. They are so rare and strikingly beautiful, that the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco included a Set of these six Plates in their Collection. Another reason for the rarity for these prints, is the very expensive and unique color printing process invented and patented by George Baxter. Baxter’s patented process consists in a special technique of combining an intaglio image from a metal plate with coloring, using oil pigments, from woodblocks. The result are colored engravings with an unique graduation of color, otherwise impossible to achieve with 1840-s printing technology. The process, though, proved commercially too expensive, lending rarity to all of George Baxter’s works.
