THE LONG SECRETED FRIEND, Or a True and Christian Information for Every Body; Containing WONDERFUL, AND APPROVED REMEDIES AND ARTS FOR MEN AND BEAST was published by John G. Hohman, Harrisburg, Pa. in 1846, 56 pages.
This is an exact replica on CD-ROM of a virtually unknown and unrecorded first English edition of the most famous occult remedy and root medicinal book printed in America. Originating among the Pennsylvania Dutch communities, these hexes, charms and remedies had a great influence on the Anglo-Saxon folk magicians of the Appalachians and the African American hoodoo doctors of the South. (For an accurate description of its use by backwoods European-American herbalists -- in a fictional context -- see the "Silver John" fantasy stories of Manley Wade Wellman). Cleaned up a bit for English readers, this first English edition, no longer claims, as did the German editions, to be knowledge obtained from the great magician Albertus Magnus. The title page calls it "True and Christian information" -- a phrase dropped form later editions, and all mention of "Damons" (sic) in this edition was changed in later ones to "bad persons" or "bad spirits". As far as we can find there is but one other known copy of this edition. The Harrisburg, 1852, edition having been previously considered the first English edition. This 1846 edition is not in Shaw & Shoemaker. The original sold on ebay a few years ago for over $400 and is now in a museum library. Truly a bizzare and rare/unrecorded tome, now available to all on CD-ROM.
