BIOGRAPHY: James Calfhill, or Caufield (1529-1570), English Anglican Calvinist theologian, priest, clergyman, archdeacon, bishop, canon, writer, poet, Oxford professor of Divinity, sub-dean of Corpus Christi College. John Martiall (1534-1597), English Roman Catholic theologian, priest, writer, controversialist, Bachelor at Law, wrote Treatise of the Cross, a reply to Calfhill’s Answer to the treatise, and The Book of the Cross. Richard Gibbings (1813-1888), English Anglican theologian, preacher, rector, writer, edited several works for the Parker Society including Stapleton’s Fortress Overthrown, and A Rejoinder to Martiall’s Reply. Backstrip is chipped at top, with gilt title: Calfhill’s Answer to Martiall. Binding is tight, no loose, missing, bent or torn pages; a few minor fore-corner creases.
