NAPOLEON
AND
HIS MARSHALS
IN TWO VOLUMES
This auction is for an original 1847 edition of "NAPOLEON AND HIS MARSHALS,” by J.T. Headley, published by Baker and Scribner. YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET OF BOOKS! These two volumes are chiefly designed to group together and illustrate the distinguished men Bonaparte gathered around him, and with whom he obtained and held the vast power he wielded. One of the greatest military commanders and a risk taking gambler; a workaholic genius and an impatient short term planner; a vicious cynic who forgave his closest betrayers; a misogynist who could enthrall men; Napoleon Bonaparte was all of these and more, the twice-emperor of France whose military endeavors and sheer personality dominated Europe in person for a decade, and in thought for centuries. The French Revolution had decimated the republic's officer class and favored individuals could achieve swift promotion, but Napoleon's fortunes rose and fell as one set of patrons came and went. The Marshals who led his armies and governed his conquered provinces were men of native strength and genius. This book covers the most striking events of that dramatic period when Napoleon was marching his victorious armies over Europe, paving the way for The Revolution to break down all the ancient barriers of privilege, leaving an open field of military intellect and genius. Published respectively in 1847 (Volume 1) and 1846 (Volume2), these books are in FAIR CONDITION for their age; especially to be over 161 YEARS OLD! Both volume's hinges are in tact. Volume One has minor foxing and there is evidence of minor staining yet not interfering with the quality of text and reading. Volume Two has a water damaged cloth cover and the front end pages appear to have mildew. One signature section (pages 218-238) is gently held by 2 of the 5 cords yet they are still attached to the book so it is mildly shaken. There is evidence of sporadic stain in the marginal areas yet again, not affecting the quality of text and reading. Despite the cosmetic flaws, this set makes an excellent read and the ILLUSTRATED! plates accompanying these volumes have been selected with great care and from the most authentic sources. ALL PAGES ARE PRESENT! The books measure 5" X 7 1/4" and there is a total of 647 pages plus 24 additional pages of ads. If you are interested in the historical aspect of The French Revolution and its principle key characters, this book is for you. We accept personal checks and money orders. No PAYPAL.
