These medals were struck in 1850 to honor South Carolina's soldier who served in the war. 68 Gold medals were made for officers and 814 Silver medals for non-commissioned officers and enlisted men. By auction record copper example such as this seem to be rare than the gold version but were likely made to test the dies or as keepsakes and not for presentation as none are awarded. Copper 48mm in Choice AU condition. The two example in Ford each brought $2,185 in January 2005. Check my store for other interesting items. Buyer pays $15.00 postage.
