1850-75 VERY RARE ANTIQUE CAUCASIAN FLATWEAVE SALT BAG

RARE ANTIQUE DOUBLE-SIDED FLATWEAVE CAUCASIAN SALT BAG, Southern Caucasus mountains, Zangadzor region of Karabagh, 3rd quarter of the 19th century. The size is: 18" x 19" (46 x 48 cm). The flat-weave technique used to create the decorations on both sides of this rare antique salt bag is often called "cicim" in the trade in the orient. In actuality, it is constructed with motifs executed in  weft-float brocading and vertical weft wrapping on a natural ivory wool balanced plain weave field. Only 100% natural, vegetable-derived, dyes were used for the colors. Even though this namakdan shows sign of ethnographic usage with nicks and abrasions, it still retains the original side cord over-castings. It is fresh to the market direct from source acquisition in the Caucasus mountains and could use a gentle hand washing to remove accumulated dust. Quite a rare specimen of a Caucasian salt bag and very collectible.
