Author: HOOKER, Dr. J. D.
Title: A Fourth Excursion to the Passes into Thibet by the Donkiah Lah.
Publisher: London: Royal Geographical Society, 1850.

Notes: This is a scarce first-hand account and color expedition map by Joseph Dalton Hooker, outlining his fourth excursion into virtually unknown eastern Himalayan passes to Tibet. Hooker spent three years engaged in botanical exploration and topographical surveying in the eastern Himalayas, from 1847 to 1850, was the first explorer of the region since Turner's embassy to Tibet in 1789, and also the first European to collect plants in the Himalayas. Hooker endured a most adventurous journey, including a period of imprisonment in Sikkim, where he was detained for several weeks by the raja. He travelled extensively in India and the Himalayas in 1849, spent considerable time in eastern Bengal and the Khasi Mountains, expertly describing the flora and fauna, and wrote to Darwin relaying to him the habits of animals in India and plants collected in Bengal. Hooker's account includes a remarkable early color map of Sikhim and the Nepalese Frontier.

Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker, OM, GCSI, MD, FRS (1817 - 1911) was an English botanist and explorer, later reputation as a systemist and plant geographer. He joined polar explorer Captain James Clark Ross's Antarctic expedition to the South Magnetic Pole after receiving a commission as Assistant-Surgeon on HMS Erebus. On this expedition Hooker ammassed collections of plants, algae and sea life. Hooker's collections from the voyage were described eventually in one of two volumes published as the 'Flora Antarctica (1844-47)'. His works on the voyage were completed with 'Flora Novae-Zelandiae (1851-53)' and 'Flora Tasmaniae (1853-59)'.

He started the series 'Flora Indica' in 1855, together with Thomas Thompson. Their botanical observations and the publication of the Rhododendrons of Sikkim-Himalaya (1849-51), formed the basis of elaborate works on the rhododendrons of the Sikkim Himalaya and on the flora of India. His works were illustrated with lithographs by Walter Hood Fitch. His greatest botanical work was the 'Flora of British India', published in seven volumes between 1872 and 1897. Hooker's survey of hitherto unexplored regions, the 'Himalayan Journals', dedicated to Charles Darwin, was published by the Calcutta Trigonometrical Survey Office and (The Minerva Library of Famous Books) Ward, Lock, Bowden & Co., 1891.

Sir Hooker's Himalayan Expedition - Rare Preliminary Account with Colour Map!
