Nice - Entrée du Port 21 cm x 13.5 cm hand tinted

We are pleased to offer this fine art lithograph view of the harbour at Nice by the landscape artist Jacques Guiaud (1811-1876). An accomplished painter, Guiaud studied lithography under Louis Watelet and thus painted this scene "from nature" and prepared the lithographic stone as well. Guiaud lived in Nice from 1847-1860 where he maintained a studio where he painted, taught private students and produced prints such as this - his lithographs were much in demand by publishers of high-end illustrated travel books. In his later career Guiaud showed some influence from impressionism but here he provides a near photo-realistic view of the port, albeit masterfully enhanced by the late evening lighting in subtle shades of blue and grey.
The detail is quite impressive as is Guiaud's use of lithographic technique similar to spirit grain aquatint for the hills receding into the distance:
Condition - Please note carefully: The print obviously exhibits some foxing as can be seen in photos, but it is mainly in margin and minimal within image; margins reinforced with old paper tape on verso.
