Being born into an artistic and wealthy family, he received a good education which led to his holding prominent positions at Cambridge University and Parliament. As a student at Trinity College, Cambridge, England, George Herbert excelled in languages and music. He went to college with the intention of becoming a priest, but his scholarship attracted the attention of King James I. Herbert served in parliament for two years. After the death of King James and at the urging of a friend, Herbert's interest in ordained ministry was renewed. In 1630, in his late thirties he gave up his secular ambitions and took holy orders in the Church of England, spending the rest of his life as a rector of the little parish of Fugglestone St Peter with Bemerton St Andrew, near Salisbury. He was noted for unfailing care for his parishioners, bringing the sacraments to them when they were ill, and providing food and clothing for those in need. Throughout his life he wrote religious poems characterized by a precision of language, a metrical versatility, and an ingenious use of imagery or conceits that was favoured by the metaphysical school of poets. He is best remembered as a writer of poems and the hymn "Come, My Way, My Truth, My Life." ~ For More Useful Information Visit www.wikipedia.com ~~~~~~~ The Volume Is In Fine Condition, All Original And Complete ~ Bound In Full Calf Leather Binding Embossed Ornaments All About The Leather 5 Compartments And 4 Bands At The Spine, Gilt Title In The Second Compartment Beveled Edges ~ Very Fine Full Gilt Page Edges Stippled By Gilt Lozenges (Diamonds With Crucifixes) Marbled Paste-downs And Endpapers Beautifully Illustrated By Tissue Guarded Full Page Gravures Blank On The Reverse Blue Ribbon Marker Laid In ~~~~~~~~ 466 Numbered Pages + Ads For The British Poets At The Rear, A Complete Tight Contents 6-3/4" Tall And 4-1/4" Wide 1854 Only Date/No Others ~~~~~~~~ In Fine Condition Leather Mildly Rubbed And Scuffed , Some Nicks Gilt Spine Title Somewhat Dull With No Loss Very Fine Stippled Gilt Page Edges ~~~~~~ A Mildly Agetoned And Scattered Foxing Contents Ex-Libris For The Previous Owner Affixed To The Front Marbled Paste-down No Writing In Book Ribbon Marker Detached And Present Internal Narrow Front Hinge Crack And Not Ex-Library ~ The Book Is Superb, It's In Fine Condition And Just Fine For Presentation
