HERE ARE THE DEFINITIONS THAT BOOK COLLECTORS USE WHEN THEY ARE DESCRIBING THEIR BOOKS: (information source "The Official Price Guide To Old Books")

MINT: As new. Right off the press. --------- FINE: Nearly new. Sometimes a dealer might overlap this with"mint."

VERY GOOD: Definitely showing wear, but not damaged. Usually a clean, tight copy. Most collectible books fit this category.

GOOD: Obviously read. Perhaps the covers show moderate wear, a hinge is cracked in front or back; some minor spine fading might be present, the binding scuffed. Perhaps the book is even a little shaken, not quite as tight as it used to be. All in all, the condition shows the book has been around for a while and used. No really major defects.

FAIR: Worn and used. Cover soiled, scuffed, evidence of repairs, shaken, perhaps a page torn here or there. The book has definitely been around.

READING COPY: About all it is good for. Or, it may interest collectors of modern first editions who keep their pristine copies on a shelf safe from prying hands but who may still want to read Hemingway or Faulkner. Reading copies come in handy for research.
