1856 & 1867 Maps of Natal Colony, Southern Africa

Theseare scarce maps drawn by the noteworthy German thematic cartographer Augustus Petermann. The map were included in the 1856 and 1867 editions of “Geographische Mittheillungen” which was published by Justus Perthes in Gotha.

Here’s a “two-fer” of maps of Natal and Zululand, Southern Africa. The first, the 1856, is 10 x 8 inches (25 x 20 cm) and is slightly age toned, though the paper is just fine This maps focuses on “Kolonie Natal” and also has a small inset map of Port Natal and “D’Urban” in BW. Very little in the way of settlement, but lots of topographic detail. The second is slightly larger (12 x 9 inches) and includes a basic map of “Amazulu” as well as Natal. This map is much more detailed and is based on explorations by a “Paxton” as well as missionaries travel and the work of a Capt Grantham. Much more settlement and many of the blanks on the earlier map are filled in. All you ever wanted to know about 19th century Natal Colony (and Zululand). Third image is a scan of the eastern portion of the 1867 map.
