1856 Malte-Brun Map - Ancient World Geography Maps x3

          This original hand-coloured steel-plate engraved map is of 3 Ancient Systems of Geography of the World 1856, by Malte-Brun.  It is from "Geographie Universelle de Malte-Brun Atlas ....", by A.H. Dufour, published 1856, by Gustave Barba, Paris.  Dufour re-drew the maps based on geography & maps of Malte-Brun, so they are essentially Malte-Brun maps, but Dufour has drawn some of his maps on a much larger scale, thus including allowing a lot more detail in certain areas.  The map image measures 31cm by 25cm (12.3in by 10in), with 2cm+ margins, Blank on the Reserve, and printed on off-white paper.

        The map is made of 3 seperate maps, each showing a different view of how the world was believed to exist in Ancient Times.  The larger one on the top, is by Ptolemy (83–c.168CE), a Roman Egyptian who is the most famous geographer of ancient times, and was drawn c150CE.  The smaller one on the left, is by the Greek mathematician/geographer, Eratosthenes (276-195BCE) and was drawn c200BCE).  The map on the bottom right, was drawn by Strabo, a Greek historian/geographer (64 BC – c24CE), and his work is an extension of Eratosthenes, as Ptolemy's is an extension of the both of them.  Great to have all 3 major maps of the world from ancient times on the one map.   Feel Free to Ask ANY Questions or for Further Photo's - happy to help!
