Condition:

      This beautiful print of La Tourterelle (or European Turtle Dove) is in excellent condition [i.e., clear and clean image, strong and bright paper, vivid colors, original full margins, no tear, and slight but even age toning]. It was printed on high quality heavy woven paper with a blank verso. There is a very faint mat mark around the image and some very minor handling stains on back side as shown by the detailed photo. Ample photos (front, back, and details) in high resolution are provided for your convenience of identification and judging its excellent quality independently.

Description:

     Edouard Travies (1809 –1865) was one of the best-known French ornithologists / bird illustrators of 19^th century. This current print was a set of 79 prints published in 1857 in Paris. It was produced via stone lithograph with hand coloring. Travies had drawn those rare images on stone himself. The birds [one adult and one young with a modern species name of Streptopelia turtur] were drawn in their natural habitat [nested among the dog roses] and in realistic feeding action. It was depicted here in near life size. This very popular and monogamous bird is widely distributed in Europe and parts of Asia and Northern Africa and is a traditional symbol of love and devotion.
