Chambersburg Books Burned by the Confederates during the Civil War:
________________________________________________________
Published by Moses Kieffer D. D., and Associates:
In the 1800s Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, in Franklin County, was a major Pennsylvania German publishing center for the German Reformed Church. ...until the Confederates burned the town during the Civil War.
The "Magazine of the German Reformed Church" was published there from 1835 until it moved to Philadelphia. That magazine had been first published in 1828 in Carlisle, by Dr. Lewis Mayer.
In the late 1840s, three German Reformed pastors joined efforts to publish church publications in Chambersburg. These pastors were Rev. Moses Kiefer plus Dr. Benjamin S. Schenck and Dr. Samuel R. Fisher.
These three pastors called their publishing firm "M. Kieffer und Co." ...Moses Kiefer and Company. And they published this book in 1858.
In 1864 these Reformed pastors who owned and operated "M Kieffer und Co." sold the firm to the church Synod ...after the Confederate Army burned most of Chambersburg to the ground. The Reformed Church Publication Board was then established in Philadelphia.
Other titles published by Moses Kieffer and associates at Chambersburg include: Philip Schaff Slavery and the Bible (1861), In Commemoration of the Three Hundredth Anniversary of the Heidelberg Catechism (1863),
Moses Kieffer had studied at Marshall College in Mercersburg, PA. He had also pastored at Waterstreet, Huntington County, PA, in Hagerstown, Maryland, and in Reading, where he helped build Reading's Second Reformed Church
Rev. Kieffer then was a professor at the seminary if Tiffin, Ohio, before serving as the pastor of Heidelberg College, in Ohio. He moved to Chambersburg in 1869, after living in Sandusky, Ohio. He also pastored at Greencastle and at Gettysburg, ...and at Sioux City, Iowa, home of the Dr. Kieffer Memorial Church.
Rare Edition: This 1858 edition is seldom seen on the antiquarian book market. Presumedly some of this edition was burned in the 1864 Chambersburg fire ...along with one of Moses Kieffer's theology book manuscripts that went up in flames, before that manuscript was ever printed. This hymn book is an excellent addition to any German-American collection.
Condition: Very Nice Condition: No library or institution markings. No previous owners' markings. Pages are bright and clean, with only an occasional hint of foxing. Pages and cover are securely bound. The cover's fore-corners are worn. The cover has some cracks to the joints along the edge of the spine, although the covers are securely attached.
