This is a fascinating expedition report that
Pre-dates Burton's All-Important book, entitled;
The Lake Regions of Central Africa. A Picture of Exploration,
which was first published in 1860.
While in Zanzibar preparing for his trip to the Lake Regions, Burton and Speke undertook a trip to the Island Pemba as well as to the African Mainland. Burton's main interest in visiting Pemba was that the pirate Captain Kidd had buried a treasure there which he had plundered throughout the Orient. After Pemba they sailed to Mombasa with its famous Fort and visited Mr. and Mrs. Rebman at the Christian Mission. Rebman advised Burton against taking the direct route to the Lakes via the Masai plains due to the hostile Masai tribe. From there they sailed up the Pangani River to he Usumbara Hills and back to Zanzibar. The travel writing is Burton at its best, with clear and detailed observations and a mass of historical data.
