1860 – ALLEGED INTIMIDATION - MURDER - INSTRUMENTS OF TORTURE – MARYLAND ELECTION FRAUD - "Maryland Contested Election - Third Congressional District - William P. Preston vs. J. Morrison Harris", Testimony in the Maryland Contested Election Case, Preston vs. Harris, United States Senate Report, 36th Congress, 1st Session, House of Representatives Miscellaneous Document No. 28 [Washington: Government Printing Office 1860]. First edition.
Scarce collectible 147 year old official report, probably disbound at some time from a set of unrelated 1860 House Documents and now held in a modern protective binder, large 8vo size (over 9" by 6"), very good clean bright condition, with 75 pages of testimony of witnesses taken at Baltimore on February 24, 1860, also statements, exhibits, correspondence etc. Preston served notice on Harris, (who had been elected to serve as a representative in Congress from the third congressional district of Maryland on the first Wednesday of November, 1859) that he intended to contest the election on the grounds that "........the election judges were not legally qualified, the election was not held according to the laws of the land, that within the election wards a large number of voters were prevented from voting by reason of violence, firearms, deadly weapons, instruments of torture, illegal combination, fraud, conspiracy, collusion, obstruction, intimidation, breach of the peace, bloodshed, and murder."...... (There are other reasons given, marked ballot tickets, "cooping" etc., but these seemed enough).
A really fascinating and scarce report into the election fraud in Baltimore, Maryland nearly a hundred and fifty years ago, of great interest to collectors of Maryland historical items and electoral historians alike. This is a genuine United States Government document…"Referred to the Committee on Elections and Ordered to be Printed March 5, 1860."
