1861 US Government Survey of Territory of New Mexico

20 x 30 inch (50 x 65 cm) black and white US Government Survey map on the usual thin Government paper. Folding as issued. Some folds reinforced on reverse with archival tape. One chip right side just touching border. Noticeable age toning along one vertical fold, light toning along the others. Overall Good +

New Mexico Territory here extends to the border with California. The survey at this point is limited to the Rio Grande Valley and north to Santa Fe with some activity as far north as Fort Garland. The survey also extends east from Santa Fe toward Fort Smith. The rest of the area is un-surveyed, but most rivers are named as are US military forts and some settlements. Yuma here is “Arizona City” with a “Gila City” just to the east. Reservations have been set aside for the Pimas, Mariciopas and Gila Apaches, all pitifully small. Fort Defiance shown. Survey signed in print by “A.P. Wilbar” in Santa Fe on July 12th 1861. Pueblos shown. Also shows Colorado as far north as Pike’s Peak, but with no detail. Not a pristine example , but serviceable and clean.
