Very interesting postal cover (envelope), letter content no longer present, made from cheap "Secesh" paper, because of wartime shortage, from Private I. V. Scott, Company "H," 12th Georgia Volunteer Infantry Regiment + Gordonsville, Virginia, Jun 20 1862, postmark + Due/10 postal rate handstamp, to Irby H. Scott, Eatonton, Putnam County AG. Private Irby G. Scott entered the Confederate military service, from Putnam County GA, on Jun 15 1861, and was mustered out at a 1st Lieutenant on Apr 9 1865, at the surrender of the Army of GEN Robert E. Lee at Appomattox Court House VA. He was wounded in the shoulder and thigh on Aug 30 1862, at the Battle of the Second Bull Run, Manassas, Virginia, shortly after this cover was mailed. The 12th Georgia Infantry Regiment completed its organization in Jun 1861, at Richmond VA. Moving to Western Virginia, the unit was assigned to GEN H. R. Johnson's command and shared in GEN Lee's Cheat Mountain Campaign. Later, the 12th served in GEN E. Johnson's, Elezy's, Trimble's, Dole's and Cook's Brigade. It participated in GEN Stonewall Jackson's Valley Campaign, then fought with the Army of Northern Virginia from the Seen Days' Battles to Cold Harbor. Later, the 12th participated in GEN Jubal A. Early's Shenandoah Valley operations and the Appomattox Campaign. This regiment lost 175 men at McDowell, 45 at Groveton and 59 at Sharpsburg. Its suffered 12 killed at Chancellorsville and 16 per cent of the 327 troops engaged in the Battle of Gettysburg. Only five officers, including LT Scott, and 60 enlisted men surrendered with Lee's Army in Apr 1865. Our brief research file is included. Just fine condition, back was ripped in opening, but is complete and presentable. *** We have been in the paper Americana and postal history businesses since 1953 and are members of the Manuscript and Ephemera Societies as well as the Military Postal History Society, American Stamp Dealers Association, American Philatelic Society, Canadian Stamp Dealers Association (Canada), Philatelic Traders Society (Great Britain) and numerous other collector organizations. |
