"Be it known that I, RICHARD J. GATLING, of Indianapolis, county of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fire-Arms..."

Background:

In 1862, a patent was issued to Richard J. Gatling for his invention of the Gatling Machine Gun. The Gatling Machine gun was a black powder field weapon, which used multiple rotating barrels turned by a hand crank to fire loose metal cartridge ammunition, using a gravity-feed system. It was first used by the Union Army during the American Civil War. Unlike earlier weapons such as the mitrailleuse which had limited capacity and long reloading times, the Gatling gun was reliable, easy to load, and had a high firing rate.
