Title: The Psalms of David - Victoria Psalter Printed by: Owen Jones' (1809-1874) The Psalms of David, "with permission dedicated to Her Most Gracious Majesty Queen Victoria," also known as the Victoria Psalter.

Description: The Psalms of David Illuminated by Owen Jones. No publisher or date (London 1862).

Size: Large folio (approx. 12.5 x 17 inches).

Description: Rich floral embossed leather binding over beveled boards, the upper board lettered "The Victoria Psalter." Pp. x, 100, with 104 full-page chromolithograph illustrations in illuminated style, using a palette of red, blue, and gold. In 1862 Jones' published the Victoria Psalter, a chromolithograph illuminated Psalter with colors limited to red, blue and gold. The text of the Psalms is that of Miles Coverdale's translation, as found in the Book of Common Prayer. The 150 Psalms are divided into 30 groups so as to be said or sung over a 30-day period. Each day is further divided into two for morning and evening prayer. The Psalm at the beginning of each group is preceded by chant tones.

Binding: A bit rubbed with corners knocked with slight loss of leather. Marbled endpapers. Internally a very good copy. This magnificent version of the Psalms is undoubtedly Owen Jones' masterpiece. It is known as the Victoria Psalter because Queen Victoria had accepted the dedication to her. The decorative borders are different on every page.
