Scarce and Interesting 19th Century Review on the Following Book
Author:
KINGLAKE, Alexander William.
Title: The Invasion of the Crimea:
its origin and an Account of its Lord Raglan - (A Review) Publisher: Boston: The Edinburgh Review, 1863.
Notes:An engaging contemporary analysis on the renowned and
historically important book, which was published in 1863.
The reviewer clearly holds in high esteem English travel writer
and historian Kinglake's
magnum opus, The Invasion of the Crimea, although does find plenty
of opportunity for criticism,
not least the author's partisanship: although it remains one of the
definitive works on the Crimean War,
Kinglake has been accused of favouring Lord Raglan at
the expense of Napoleon
III, for whom he had an extreme aversion. The reviewer
highlights Kingworth's
numerous misconceptions and inaccuracies in depicting
the diplomatic transactions preceding the war and the
offensive sketches of the various ministers, irked particularly by
the portrayal of Lord Palmerston.
Excerpt
"Mr Kinglake had the good fortune to appropriate
the most imporatnat and heroic subject of our times;
he has degraded it sometimes into a libel, sometimes
into a caricature. He had the advantage of some personal
knowledge of the men and the events he describes; but his
personal experience chiefly manifests itself inthe shape of
invincible antipathies aor preposseions. He intended, no doubt,
to raise a monument ot the glory of England, but he has defaced
it by injustice to France. For these reasons we are satisfied that
the country cannot accept this book as the fitting and lasting
record oftheCrimean war in English literature; but will rather
deplore taht the fruits of great talent and labour have been
marred by a greater lack of temper and judgment: 'Some hand
more calm and sage the leaf must fill.'"
